Sixth Form Dress Code policy

High standards of dress and personal appearance for all students are an important part of Sixth Form Centre life.

In order to prepare our young people for a formal and professional working environment the following dress code applies to all sixth form students.

Sixth Form Centre students should wear:
  • In general: clothing should be clean and in a good state of repair
  • Lanyard and ID badge: these should be worn around your neck at all times
  • Trousers: tailored trousers, chinos or smart jeans.

  • Shorts: knee length chino or denim shorts, or culottes.

  • Tops:

    • Collared shirts, polo shirts, blouses or smart t-shirts

    • Jumpers, sweatshirts or hoodies, worn with the hood down

    • Smart jackets or cardigans

    • Tops should be of appropriate length and cut, to cover chest and midriff

  • Skirts and dresses: of an appropriate length (longer than fingertips when standing up).

  • Footwear: clean shoes or trainers, in a good state of repair.

  • Hair and accessories:

    • Hair should be neat and tidy, and in a natural tone.

    • Jewellery, makeup and fake nails may need to be removed in certain sessions

    • Ear piercings and one discreet nose stud are permitted. Other piercings should not be visible.

  • Sportswear: should be worn for PE lessons and physical enrichment sessions.

Below are examples of inappropriate dress for our Sixth Form study environment:

Insufficiently smart

  • Frayed or ripped clothing

  • Jogging bottoms and leggings (unless for PE / enrichment)

  • Shorts: cargo or beach shorts

  • Flip flops, crocs or sliders

  • Active wear (unless for PE / enrichment)

Inappropriate

  • Clothing that:

    • Displays offensive slogans or messages

    • Advocates illegal acts or hate crimes

    • References drugs or profanities

    • Shows any other inappropriate imagery

  • Very high heels

Immodest

  • Any clothing that is see-through, strappy, strapless or cropped

If you are in doubt as to what to wear, please contact a member of the Sixth Form Team who will be able to provide guidance.

Please note:

Students may be required to wear more professional clothing for formal occasions such as business presentations, workplace visits and the Prom and when representing the SFC.

Outdoor clothing e.g. coats, hats and scarves should not be worn inside the SFC building.

Any questions regarding the SFC dress code should be directed to the Director (Inclusion), as should any queries about any reasonable adjustments on medical/sensory or religious grounds. If a student’s dress is deemed to not meet the dress code, the student will be asked to remove it or change it. A student may also be asked to go home to change, regardless of cost or distance.

Bring your own device

We provide fully filtered, secure wireless internet for students throughout the Sixth Form Centre. On a daily basis much work is undertaken through Google for Education, a suite of productivity tools for student collaboration, communication and organisation. For these reasons, we operate a 1-to-1 ‘Bring your own device’ (BYOD) policy

All students will need to bring a mobile internet-enabled device (e.g. a tablet, laptop or chromebook) that meets our minimum specifications, every day. A mobile phone is not sufficient. Student discounts are available through local retailers.

Students are also able to borrow a chromebook from us in exchange for a £50 deposit to cover incidental damage. For more details please contact a member of the Sixth Form Team.
